Abstract

A new class of practical electro-optic (EO) devices based on poled interfaces has been enabled by recently developed lithographically-defined poling processes for ferroelectric materials.1 While such devices have been demonstrated in barium-sodium niobate2 and LiNbO33 using poled interfaces defined during crystal growth, the poor control of the domain features severely limited device practicality. The new planar poling processes provide the geometrical control required for practical devices.
