Abstract

We have recently demonstrated a CDMA network in which four channels, each with a capacity of 1 Gbit/s, were coherence multiplexed and transmitted with low error rate over 8 km of fiber.1 In this paper, we theoretically determine the capacity and number of users that can be supported by code-division multiple access (CDMA) networks that use coherence multiplexing.2 Our analysis shows close agreement with the measured performance of our experimental demonstration. This is the first comparison between experiment and theory for the performance of an optical CDMA network.
