Abstract
Interests in high-speed metro loop optical link (>10 Gbit/s) have increased in the past few years, not just for long-haul transmission systems but also for medium span systems based on the 1310-nm optimized standard fiber. Many research groups have been trying to exploit the lowest-loss window of the fiber at 1.55-μm wavelength and a successful transmission at 10 Gbit/s of data up to 50 km was achieved using a low chirp electroabsorption modulated laser type, but not without a certain amount of penalty due to the high dispersion of the fiber at that wavelength.1 On the other hand, at the zero dispersion wavelength of 1310 ran, fiber dispersion is negligible and a simplefiber-losslimitedconfiguration can be used. A successful transmission at a bit rate of 10 Gbit/s using an EML device at the wavelength of 1.3 μm over 48 km of standard fiber without any optical amplifier has been reported,2 The transmission distance over a conventional fiber at 1.3-μm wavelength was limited so far by the lack of a proper optical amplifier as compared to the 1.55-μm wavelength. Recently, Raman amplifier represents an attractive alternative to the more commonly known Pr+3-doped fluoride fiber. Because of an ease of splicing of the amplifier to the standard silica fiber with somewhat higher reliability than that of Pr+3-doped fluoride fiber. The amplifier consists of high power 800-nm diode pumped coupled into the Raman Fiber generating the third Stokes at 1240 nm with a proper grating written on to the fiber to filter out the first and second stokes as well as the spontaneous emission for both the forward and backward-propagating light.4 Here we report the first transmission experiment, to our knowledge, over 102.5 km long fiber at a bit rate of 10 Gbit/s using a 1.3-μm wavelength integrated DFB/electroabsorption modulator in combination with Raman amplifier and a transimpedance-type receiver front end.
