Abstract
In long-distance high-speed optical transmission systems, nonlinear waveform distortion stemming from the interplay between the Kerr effect and group-velocity dispersion of transmission fibers sets a limit on the transmission capacity of the systems. To overcome this limitation and unleash the full capacity of the fibers, the use of midway optical phase conjugation was proposed,1 and it has now become one of the promising techniques for coping with the nonlinear waveform distortion, as an alternative to the more-sophisticated soliton transmission systems.2
