Abstract
Coherent optical transmission systems require the states of polarization (SOPs) of the received signal and the local-oscillator signal to be matched. We have constructed a polarization controller based on the Faraday effect.1 Because it is an all-fiber-optic system and has no moving parts, it features low optical loss and fast response. The control algorithm provides endless tracking with only two rotators and assures less than 1 dB of mismatch power penalty under normal operation.
