Abstract

Four-wave mixing (FWM) in a saturable amplifier has been investigated in a number of gain media, including CO2 copper vapor, Nd:YAG, and laser dyes. Efficient phase conjugation can be generated by FWM in such saturable amplifiers since all the interacting beams can experience amplification in the nonlinear region. In this work we present investigations of FWM in a laser-pumped Ti:sapphire amplifier, which is the first study, to our knowledge, of phase conjugation in a broadly tunable solid-state gain medium.
