Abstract

We have developed a novel optical deformation analyzer capable of investigating the mechanical state of a plastically deforming solid-state object nondestructively. By utilizing the newly developed plastic-deformation-wave (PDW) theory,1 rather than relying on visual inspection, this system is able to predict the location of a future fracture in a solid-state object under a constant external load before a microscopic crack appears.
