Design of an energy-balance-measurement diagnostic for the upgraded OMEGA laser system

Abstract

Direct-drive inertial-confinement fusion (ICF) requires the on-target irradiation to be uniform within 1%–2%. This is achieved only if each beam reaches the target with approximately a 2% mutual energy balance. At the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics the desired UV irradiation is produced by frequency tripling the OMEGA laser system, a 1053-nm Nd:glass laser. At the output of this system, the unconverted 1053-nm fundamental energy, the residual 527-nm frequency-doubled energy, and the 351-nm frequency -ripled energy must be sampled and measured for each of the 60 beams. Results from these measurements are used to adjust the laser system to achieve the desired on-target UV energy balance.
