Abstract

One of the limitations of intense KrF laser beams in either short-pulse systems or laserfusion systems is the self-focusing and selfphase-modulation that occurs in air propagation or in optics.1,2 These effects are due to the positive nonlinear refractive index n2. We present both measurements and theory that demonstrate a large negative n2 in xenon at the KrF wavelength. This allows the possibility of compensating the n2 effects of air and optics in KrF laser systems.
