Open path diode laser sensor for trace gas detection

Abstract

In recent years there has been considerable interest in using diode laser based sensors for a variety of environmental, medical, and process control applications. Diode lasers have the advantages of small size, nonintrusiveness, speed, and ease of use. One spectroscopic technique that has been employed with diode lasers to obtain high detection sensitivity is high frequency modulation spectroscopy. The technique has been used with near and mid-infrared diode laser systems for quantum limited detection of absorbances in the ICC8 level. Diode lasers are ideal candidates for this technique since they can be easily modulated by direct injection current modulation.
