Improved external-cavity-tuned laser performance through output coupler optimization

Abstract

Wide wavelength tuning range and high output power are important objectives for tunable laser sources. An external-cavity- tuned laser (ECL) block diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The semiconductor chip output- coupler facet is normally left uncoated or is passivation-coated with a half-wavelength optical thick coating. Neither the uncoated nor the passivation-coated output coupler facet reflectivity is best for maximum ECL tuning range or output power. We show that both tuning range and output power can be significantly increased by altering the output coupler reflectivity with a multilayer thin film coating deposited on the laser's output coupler facet.
