Abstract
Kerr Lens Mode-locking (KLM) is a powerful technique for ultrashort pulse generation12 based on the self-focusing effect in an intracavity Kerr medium, which modifies the resonator mode so that the losses, as for a fast saturable absorber, decrease with increasing beam power. A serious limitation of this technique is that the mode-locking regime is not self-starting from cw due to the low loss modulation in cw regime.
