Abstract
Many solid-state lasers have been shown to generate ultrashort pulse trains when the cavity parameters are well chosen,1'4 Such a regime of operation, called self-mode locking, is attributed5 to Kerr lensing in the gain medium or in another intracavity component. It is now well established that Kerr lensing is most effective at creating short pulses when the laser cavity is operated near the edges of the geometrical stability zones. Many experiments have revealed1·3 that the beam shape exhibits a multiple-lobe profile in multimode (cw) operation, and a single-mode Gaussian-like profile in the self-mode-locked regime. Experiments3 have also reported that temporal break-up into two or more short pulses may take place at high pumping levels in the selfmode-locked regime.
