Abstract

Interest in apatite host crystals for Nd3+ doping has recurred during the past two years. In this paper the spectroscopic and lasing properties of several Nd3+-doped apatite crystals are reported and compared with each other and with more well known vanadate and fluoride Nd3+-doped laser crystals. Both pulsed and CW laser pumping were used in order to effectively simulate laser diode pumping. The attractive property of Nd3+-doped apatites, that is having a single strong emission line, enabled excellent lasing and in particular for Nd3+ doped Sr5(PO4)3F (S-FAP) superior lasing was found at both 1.059 and 1.328 μm.
