Abstract
Numerous studies of laser action on integral calculi performed during last few years make it clear that the most effective stone fragmentation is provided by laser radiation having a pulse duration in the range of a few hundreds nanoseconds. In this case it is possible to use the optical fiber for laser delivery both in contact and in non-contact operation without significant destruction of the fiber. Presently the most common laser used for lithotripsy is alexandrite.
