Abstract

Theories for efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) in fibers and waveguides have been proposed which predict the production of an internal periodic dc electric field,1 This field is necessary for quasi-phase matching which allows an effective second order susceptibility to be produced by the product of the field and a third order susceptibility. Verification of this mechanism requires correlation of observed SHG production with higher order waveguide mode combinations within the waveguide and external electric field induced SHG.
