Efficient time domain demultiplexing with separate signal and control wavelengths in an AIGaAs nonlinear directional coupler

Abstract

Recently, we have reported all-optical demultiplexing in an AIGaAs nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC) at photon energies below half the band gap.1–2 This first demonstration of an integrated demultiplexer used signal and control pulses in two different polarizations, respectively TM and TE. In the presence of a strong control pulse, the signal pulse remains in the input guide (BAR), while when the control pulse is absent, the signal pulse crosses over to the adjacent guide (CROSS). This geometry had the disadvantage that the coupling length for the TE and TM polarization are different, leading to a poor switching characteristic.1
