Abstract
Ridge waveguide distributed Bragg reflector (RW-DBR) lasers are common in InP-based lasers for narrow linewidth communications applications.1 However, the device fabrication generally entails regrowth of part of the laser structure which then makes it difficult to fabricate with aluminum containing alloys. The RW-DBR (Fig. 1) reported here can be fabricated in any material system with only a standard growth for the laser structure.2 A single DBR is dry etched near the active region to a depth sufficient to provide coupling for wavelength selective feedback. A lateral index-guide is then fabricated to produce low-threshold, stable, fundamental mode devices.
