Novel technique for all-haul optical time domain reflectometry using optical fiber amplifier and switches

Abstract

Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) is a popular technique for locating breaks and measuring losses along fiber links. The requirement of wide single-way dynamic range (SWDR) is necessary for an OTDR to characterize long-haul systems and a demand for high spatial resolution with sufficient SWDR is required to diagnose short- span and branched distribution networks. Narrowing pulsewidth is the way to increase the resolution, however, this decreases the SWDR. It is now difficult to achieve major performance improvement by traditional methods.
