Abstract

Although Nd:YLf has a number of well-known advantages as a gain medium it can be handicapped under high cw pump powers because of its inferior thermal fracture limit compared to Nd:YAG. After some preliminary thermodynamical considerations to determine the Nd:YLF-slab dimensions in order to reduce the fracture problem, and by complementing these considerations with interferometric temperature measurements in YLF slabs of different thicknesses, we were able to identify a configuration capable of being end-pumped each side with 20 W cw (797 nm). The rhombic shaped slab employed (Fig. 1(a)) is similar to the scalable end-pumped approach as proposed in Ref. 1.
