Abstract

Optical fiber transmission systems utilizing erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) to overcome loss limits are becoming more attractive for long-haul, high bitrate applications. The ultimate distance limit for these systems is typically set by dispersion, so it is essential to employ an optical source with low chirp. Ill—V electroabsorptive semiconductor modulators integrated with a laser source are attractive.1'5 However, these integrated laser-modulators are more complex than discrete devices, because the interactions between the two devices must be considered.
