Abstract

Strontium-ion recombination lasers (SRLs) are useful sources of violet (416.2 and 430.5 nm) radiation with average output powers usually in the range 1-2 W, at kilohertz pulse recurrence frequencies and with peak powers of a few kilowatts.1 In conventional electrical-discharge excited SRLs, laser oscillation occurs in the early afterglow of a high-density current pulse (~200 A/cm2), with high helium buffer-gas pressures (100s - >1000 millibar), in the presence of a small partial pressure of strontium vapor (around 0.03 mbar).2
