Abstract

Surface-emitting harmonic generators (SEHGs), based on nonlinear interaction of oppositely propagating waveguide modes, have been shown to have potential applications as coherent visible light sources and novel opfo-electronic devices.1,2 In most of the SEHG applications, a mono Ethically integrated laser source is required to produce either one or both of the counterpropagating waves. Recently, we reported an active SEHG consisting of a multilayer AlsGa,.xAs waveguide integrated monolithic ally with an InGaAs/GaAs SQW laser.3 We provide here design optimization for the laser-integrated SEHG structure with emphasis on obtaining high-conversion efficiency for the sum-frequency (SF) light and reasonable performance for the onboard SQW laser.
