Abstract

Gain switching is she simplest and most reliable way to generate ultrashort pulses from a semiconductor laser. With, dynamic single mode lasers, such as DFB lasers, single mode pulses without substructure can be obtained. But the pulses thus generated are relatively long and usually accompanied by frequency chirping. Fig. 1(a) shows theSHG autocorrelation trace of gain- switched pulses from a 1.51-µm DCPBH-DP8 laser diode modulated at 2.4 GHz.
