Abstract

Ultra long-span optical communication systems have been constructed by using erbium - doped optical fiber amplifiers as optical repeaters. In such systems, the fiber loss is repeatedly compensated by the optical amplifier gain G, which satisfies G = exp(γl), where l ts the repeater separation, and γ the loss constant of the fiber.
