Lasers applied to plant physiology: supersensitive detection of ethylene

Abstract

The laser photo-acoustic (LPA) detection method is a sensitive way to study the presence of low gas concentration at atmospheric pressure. The combination of a small waveguide CC2-laser and a sensitive photoacoustic cell, placed intracavity, enables us to detect concentrations of ethylene (C2H4) at a level three orders of magnitude lower than is commonly achieved in gaschromatographs (1:1011 against 1:108).
