Coupling length adjustment in InP/InGaAsP optical directional coupler switch

Abstract

In order to suppress the crosstalk in an optical directional coupler switch, the coupling length should be equal to the device length. Previously, Ushikubo et al. developed the cladding layer thickness-controlled switch (CTC switch)1 in which the coupling length was adjusted by etching an upper cladding layer. However, it is difficult to precisely adjust the coupling length by the conventional fabrication technique. In this paper, we propose a new technique for adjusting the coupling length, and demonstrate InP/InGaAsP 2 × 2 switches.
