Efficient vibrational Raman conversion in N2 and O2 ceils using super-fluorescence seeding

Abstract

We report 35%./21%, respectively, first Stokes vibrational conversion in a Nd:YAG-pumped nitrogen/oxygen Raman cell. Broadband super-fluorescence is employed to seed the Raman cell; significantly increasing the first Stokes conversion efficiencies with no effect on the Raman spectrum. Addition of helium buffer gas reduces stimulated Brillouin gain and increases the thermal conductivity. Significant improvement of the spatial mode quality is achieved by using one-sided gentle heating to induce natural convection.
