Abstract

We demonstrate self-starting passive mode-locking of a diode pumped Nd fiber laser using a multiple quantum well (MQW) saturable absorber. Mode-locking was initiated and maintained by the MQW with pulse durations down to 260 fs being routinely obtained. In addition, shorter pulses (130 fs) could be generated by exploiting nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) in the fiber[1]. Here the MQW simply initiates the pulse forming process. With a stronger pump source self-starting pulses down to 60 fs could be generated.
