Abstract
Free space optical interconnections offer the potential for both large numbers of interconnections and high speed interconnections between arrays of semiconductor devices. Systems with as many as 2048 devices per array have been demonstrated [1]. However, the data rate in these systems has been limited to less than 1 MHz, because of the limited laser power available, high loss in the interconnection optics, and moderate required optical switching energies of the devices.
