Abstract
Spatial-hole-burning (SHB) in semiconductor lasers affects output characteristics such as frequency chirp and light-current linearity, particularly in distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers.1,2 Using the spontaneous emission emitted through the substrate of the laser diode chip and its response to a radio frequency drive current, we are able to determine experimentally the profile and depth of spatial hole burning in a laser diode.3
