Photorefractive visualization through opaque scattering media

Abstract

The visualization of objects hidden by natural scattering media like a fog or turbid liquids is a very old problem. From the optical viewpoint the main problem to be solved here is selection of a very low level of signal at the output of the scattering layer from the noise background. The energy losses due to scattering are responsible for exponential attenuation of the undistorted signal part of an image bearing radiation along this layer. At the same time, part of the scattered radiation, together with the background radiation is caught by an objective in the optical system and serves as a noise.
