Characterization and optimization of reverse saturable absorbers for optical limiting

Abstract

It has been proposed that reverse saturable dyes, with their fast response times, could be exploited in optical limiting components. We will report picosecond measurements and theoretical analysis for a range of phthalocyanine derivatives and for the model dye 1,3,3,1',3',3' hexamethylindotricarbocyanine iodine (HITCI). The HITCI results point out a fundamental problem with the use of induced absorption alone in limiting, namely the possible saturation of the excited-state absorption.
