Abstract

Avco Research Laboratory has recently developed a high-power dye laser for the Army (MICOM). The device is a flashlamp-pumped transverse flow laser, designed to operated at >100-J laser pulse energy and at a repetition rate up to 10 Hz. The lasing channel is 22 cm in the flow direction, 45 cm in optical direction, and 0.5 cm wide. A schematic representation of the laser head is shown in Fig. 1. Energy is extracted using a mixed stable/unstable resonator shown in Fig. 2. Performance is enhanced through the use of a converter dye solution in regions flowing parallel to the lasing dye channel which increases the useful wavelength range of the flashlamp output.
