Excess phase modulation in 1.55-μm distributed feedback semiconductor lasers

Abstract

Chirp, under the modulation of single wavelength semiconductor lasers, causes fundamental limitations to the performance of high-speed long-haul optical communications systems. The theoretical modeling of this phenomenon is traditionally done in terms of the rate equations, in which spatial dependence is explicitly neglected. In this paper we experimentally examine the correctness of this model.
