Efficient line narrowing of an excimer-pumped β-barium borate optical parametric oscillator

Abstract

The type 1 optical parametric oscillator based on barium borate (here abbreviated as BBO-OPO) has become established as an efficient coherent source of radiation, widely tunable throughout the near ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared regions. However the inherent linewidth varies across the tuning range from subangstrom to multinanometer levels (Fig. 1). We describe here a compact cavity design using Fabry-Perot etalons which has been used in our XeCl excimer-pumped system1 and which offers a considerably more efficient method of controlling the OPO linewidth than diffraction grating methods previously used.2
