Abstract
Measurements of beat frequency between the counterpropagating pulse trains in a femtosecond ring laser indicate a surprising absence of coupling between the frequencies of the oppositely traveling pulses. Scattering of one beam into the other generally locks the frequencies of the two counterpropagating beams together. A sufficiently fast rotation rate Ω of the laser support can unlock the two frequencies.
