Abstract
Fiber switches based on nonlinear fiber-Sagnac interferometers have been demonstrated by a number of different groups1 at extremely high data rates. Because of the near-instantaneous response of the optical Kerr effect in fiber, the ultimate rate at which this type of switch is operated will probably be limited by other considerations such as pulse generation, high-speed modulation, or the deleterious effects of propagation on short pulses.
