Abstract

Apart from Monte Carlo methods, optical pulse propagation through scattering media has been modeled using parabolic1,2 and hyperbolic3 partial differential equations. However, the validity regimes of these equations have not been clearly delineated, leading to controversies regarding their applicability.3 We present a simple 1-D model of optical pulse propagation and reflection using a transmission line analogy which defines the regimes of validity, and also enables the reflection and transmission of optical pulses to be easily calculated.
