Abstract

When optical fibers are irradiated with intense fundamental and second-harmonic (SH) wave-lengths for long periods of time, permanent defects are created in the normally isotropic SiO2. These defects have a dipole-allowed χ(2) that is periodic along thedolom fiber length with the period of the coherent mixing term E(ω)2E*(2ω), i.e., Δk -= 2k(ω) — k(2ω).1 Much of the recent work on this χ(2) grating formation has concentrated on growth and saturation mechanisms that are coupled to the phase coherence of the grating.
