Abstract
The large bandwidth of Ti:sapphire makes it attractive for short pulse applications. Indeed, recent studies have been focused on passive1–4 mode-locking of the Ti:sapphire laser. Resonant Passive Mode-locking1 features stable picosecond pulse trains and TEM00 mode behavior, without a stabilization of the external cavity. Self-mode-locking by expanding the main cavity symmetrically and chirp compensation as reported by Spence et al.2 shows pulses as short as 60 fs. However, self-starting and pure TEM00 operations are not consistently obtained.
