Abstract

Light propagation in turbid media has received renewed interest with the introduction of laser photomedicine.1 Since photodynamic therapy as well as photoablation depend on light distribution and energy deposition within the tissue, a good model of tissue optics is essential to understanding them. The ability to extract quantitative findings from transmission, reflection,2 or laser-induced fluorescence measurements depends critically on having a valid model as well as the ability to measure the scattering and absorption cross sections.
