Abstract

Two of the most important nonlinear processes occurring in single-mode optical fiber are self* phase modulation (SPM) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). SPM forms the basis for the fiber-grating pair-pulse compressor,1,2 which has become an important experimental technique to achieve ultrashort pulses at a large variety of wavelengths. SRS is useful for frequency-conversion applications,3 but competes with SPM and limits the power of the optical pulse in fiber. Researchers have generally agreed4 that SRS must be avoided if high-quality pulse compression is to be achieved.
