Abstract

Optical-fiber modules are now attractive devices in the information society for their high-speed, low-noise, and mass transmission capabilities. Specifically, lower cost and more compact modules are in great demand for short-haul transmissions and fiber-to-the-home applications. For such purposes, a multimode fiber module using an IR light-emitting diode is the first candidate, but this module is still expensive and is not as compact as others. To realize a fiber module that is lower in cost and more compact, we describe a single-mode fiber module using a single, micro Fresnel lens (MFL) and a compact disc 0.78-μm semiconductor laser. A MFL is an attractive optical device because of its thin, planar structure, low cost, easy mass production capabilities, and easy integration with other optical components.1 We have developed compact sensors, light sources, etc. by using the MFL.2
