Abstract
Precise frequency stabilization of diode lasers is essential to use the available frequencies efficiently with lightwave frequency-division-multiplexed (FDM) communications. Atomic and molecular absorption lines are promising as references because of their excellent long-term stability. Krypton (Kr) and acetylene (C2H2) lines have recently been used to stabilize a 1.5-μm diode laser at a fixed absorption frequency.1,2 In FDM applications, however, frequency tunability is also required. We report the frequency stabilization of a 1.5-μm distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser, offering submegahertz absolute stability and >10-GHz tunability at the same time.
