Spectral dynamics of nearly single-mode laser diodes

Abstract

In high speed optical communication systems a high degree of spectral purity of the employed laser diodes is required, especially when dispersion shifted fibers are not used. The side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) under static and dynamic conditions is often used as a measure of spectral purity. In a recently published paper,1 Choy and co-workers showed that random excitations of a side mode during the switching can affect the bit error rate performance of a transmission system even when laser diodes with a static SMSR in excess of 30 dB are used.
