Ultrasonic measurements on a nonlinear optical crystal: MBA-NP

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

One of the problems which arises when attempting to translate the nonlinear optical properties of an organic molecule into those of the single crystal material is an understanding of the factors influencing the formation of a particular crystal structure. The present study on the ultrasonic measurements of a nonlinear optical material, (-)-2-(α-methylbenzylammo)-5-nitro- pyridine, have been performed in an attempt to determine the nature of the intermolecular interactions which give rise to the monoclinic structure ZP1 exhibited by single crystals of this molecule. Data are presented in the form of a poster on the crystal growth of this material using methanol and ultrasonic measurements in the 15- 18-MHz frequency range on seven selected crystal orientations. The measurements have been performed over a temperature range from 343 to 303 К and include the following crystal orientations: [100], [010], [001], [110], [101], [011], and [101].
