Abstract
The charge transport model, as formulated by Vinetskii and Kukhtarev,1 has been used to explain the optical properties arising from the photorefractive effect. Its beauty and simplicity have led to its wide use in the discussion of the nonlinear optical properties as well as in the deduction of critical physical quantities.2 There now exists ample evidence that the model appears to be incomplete since it cannot predict the simplest possible measurement. For example, the measured erasure rate in barium titanate is not a linear function of erase laser intensity.3
