Abstract
Using numerical simulation, we tested the suitability of both solitons and transmission at λ0 in the NRZ format for use in high bit rate all-optical ultralong distance systems. We focus on effects intrinsic to the fiber itself, including first and foremost the inevitable index nonlinearity and third-order dispersion. We also include well known defects of practical fibers, such as fluctuations in λ0 (variation in D) and birefringence (polarization dispersion). We have considered bit rates from 2.5 to 10 Gbit/s; for the NRZ format we tried a number of signal power levels and pulse shapes. Within this parameter space we tried to identify those regions where one can expect to have successful signal transmission over very long distances.
