Abstract
Optical amplifiers will become key components in lightwave transmission and switching systems. The semiconductor optical amplifier is attractive, because it is integrable with other optoelectronic devices in monolithic photonic circuits.1 Also, the amplification band of semiconductor amplifiers can be varied for multiple wavelength systems by controlling the band gap wavelength of the active material.
